• In 2007, a restructuring of the Nursing Education and Development portfolio to include an eLearning Lead, Nursing Education Specialist, Nurse Clinicians and other education practice leaders has resulted in a more centralized and coordinated approach to education.
  • Clinical Practice and Education Group (CPEG) is made up of Nurse Clinicians and other Education Practice Leaders from the Department of Nursing Education and Development representing different clinical specialties throughout the hospital. The mission of the CPEG is to create, inspire and foster a safe and dynamic learning environment in partnership with nurses to achieve the best care for patients and their families. CPEG has worked hard to develop and implement many educational and clinical initiatives including the following:  

    • Performance Management System education for staff nurses
    • Learning Management System implementation for existing staff
    • Nursing Department Nursing Education Days (February –July 2008)
    • Patient Transfer Checklist
    • Safe sharps handling and disposal review
    • Safety Engineered Hollow Bore Needle Conversion (IV catheters)

  • Academic Partnerships - The Gerald P. Turner Department of Nursing is affiliated with over 14 Universities and colleges in Ontario and Canada. We play a significant role in undergraduate, post-degree and graduate nursing education. As an affiliate of the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto, we continue to foster strong academic relationships through leadership and representation on Faculty committees and through academic cross-appointments.

    • In 2007-2008,MSH nurses holding Cross-appointments to the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing increased from 14 to 26 
    • In 2007-2008,Total undergraduate student placements were 364 and total contact hours 63,583
    • In 2007-2008,Post-degree placements in advanced nursing education in ICU, ER, NICU and OR.
  • New Graduate Promise - Mount Sinai Hospital has experienced an average turnover rate of about eight per cent as compared with the provincial average for academic teaching hospitals of nine per cent. This has consistently resulted in about 120-130 new nursing staff every year. This year, because of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care New Graduate Promise, employers were funded to provide fulltime positions for new graduate nurses.

    • In 2007- 2008, 76 new graduate nurses were hired at MSH.
    • In 2007 – 2008, 44 new graduate nurses were hired through ministry funding.
    • In 2007 – 2008, 87 per cent of eligible candidates have successfully transitioned into permanent fulltime positions
    • In 2007-2008, 53 nurses received tuition support through the Department of Nursing. 55 per cent of these nurses were enrolled in graduate education.
  • As of April 1, 2007, all staff orientation was managed through the web-based Learning Management System (LMS). This system allows managers to assign, monitor and review the learning plans for each staff member. It also allows staff to take the eLearning portion of their orientation and continuing education courses. With the use of the LMS, a total 585 hours of General Nursing Orientation was provided centrally.
