  • The health team at Mount Sinai’s Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes has been working with young adults with Type 1 diabetes thanks to a new high-tech pilot research program called SWEET Talk (Success with Expectations, Emotions, and Thoughts). Christine Opsteen, a Clinical Nurse Specialist along with Karen Gorecki, also a Clinical Nurse Specialist, and a team of Mount Sinai experts, have developed SWEET Talk to help them improve their diabetes care. SWEET Talk is a tailor-made program that uses face-to-face and online interaction to provide young adults with additional coping skills to improve their quality of life and diabetes self-care. It’s the first program of its kind in Ontario, and consists of three group sessions led by diabetes nurse specialists and five online sessions involving a secure website and web cams. People between the ages of 17 and 25 with Type 1 diabetes, a disease that develops when the body stops making insulin, will benefit from this psychosocial intervention.
