Mount Sinai Hospital’s Lawrence and Frances Bloomberg Centre for Women’s and Infants’ Health is Canada’s largest and most comprehensive maternity centre, renowned for superb care, its focus on complicated and high-risk pregnancies, and for bringing the latest discoveries from the laboratory bench to the patient bedside.
Dr. Greg Ryan has a special place in the hearts of many parents because he and his Fetal Medicine team have literally saved the lives of their twins and triplets.
Ten years ago, Dr. Ryan became the first doctor in Canada to perform in utero laser surgery to correct Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), a rare condition that occurs in 15 per cent of pregnancies of identical twins. Untreated, TTTS is fatal to one or both babies in up to 90 per cent of cases.
Since then, Dr. Ryan has performed more than 180 TTTS surgeries, including one at just 14½ weeks gestation, the world’s earliest case. Mount Sinai is the main Canadian centre for treatment of TTTS, and our survival rate is 85 percent, among the best results in the world. Dr. Ryan has trained colleagues who have gone on to establish programs to correct TTTS in Australia, Holland, Jordan, Ireland and the United States.
